A top member of German far-right party The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has converted to Islam according to the party’s chairman Andreas Kalbitz.
Arthur Wagner became an AfD member in 2015 and has now stepped down from a leading role in the party.
The AfD ran a anti-Islam and anti-immigration campaign with slogans such as “Stop Islamisation” and “Islam does not belong to Germany.” They won 94 seats in the elections last year making it Germany’s third-largest party.
It is not the first time and antagonist of Islam has converted to the very religion he or she was against after learning what the religion was really about.
In 2012, Arnoud van Doorn from the anti-islamic Dutch Freedom Party (PVV) announced his conversion to Islam and travelled to Saudi Arabia for an Islamic pilgrimage.

His eldest son, Iskander Amien De Vries also converted to Islam, he explained why:
“I saw my father become more peaceful after converting to Islam. That’s when I realized there is something good in this religion and it made me change my perception of Muslims. I started studying Quran.”
