The Incredible Story of Mohammed Alaa – Syria’s Abu Hurairah

The war in Syria has displaced millions. The city of Aleppo is continuing to suffer bombardements from Russian and Syrian government forces which often result in the death of civilians.

As a result, people have left Aleppo to other areas of Syria and many have sought refuge in neighboring countries such as Turkey. But one man has decided to stay in order to look after Aleppo’s cats.

Mohammed Alaa Jaleel is Syria’s Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu Hurairah means Father of Cats and he was given that nickname by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) because of his fondness of cats.

He was featured in a programme broadcasted on the BBC where he talked about the 100 cats he looks after. Many of the cats, he says were pets left by families fleeing Aleppo.

But Mohammed says he isn’t going anywhere,

“I’ll stay with them no matter what happens”

Mohammed says the cats have now become his friends since his friends have also left.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked: ”O Allah’s Messenger! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals?” He replied: “There is a reward for serving any living being.” (Reported by Bukhari)
