1. Understand the words of your Lord without a translation
If someone who is beloved to us sent us a letter in a foreign language, we would rush to find out what it says. We can get it translated but the true meaning will only be understood in the original language. The Arabic used in the Qur’an is rich and full of meaning – no translation can ever do it justice.
2. Understand the words of the Prophet
Imagine being able to read and understand the words of our beloved prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) directly in the Arabic language. Learning Arabic will mean you will be able to understand the ahadith of the Prophet without needing to rely on a translation.
3. Increase Khushu in Salah
Your concentration in Salah will increase as you will be able to understand each and every part of the salah from the surahs to the adhkar. Salah will no longer be a set of actions void of contemplation. You will able to have a more meaningful conversation with your lord.
Furthermore, how many times have you stood in Tarawih prayers wishing you could understand what the Imam is reciting? Make that wish come true by learning Arabic.
4. Access books on Islamic Sciences to engage with the religion with greater depth.
Though many books about the Islamic Sciences have now been translated, many of the books can only be truly appreciated in their original language – whether its a book on Tafsir, commentary of Hadith or a book on Islamic Jurisprudence.
5. It is the 5th most common language in the world
The Arabic language is spoken by more than 300 million people around the world and it is the official language in over 24 countries. By learning Arabic, you’ll be able to communicate with Arabic speakers around the world.
6. Increase job opportunities
Research suggests someone who knows a second language is more employable. Learning Arabic will increase your employability prospects and it will look great on your CV/resume.
7. Learning a new language boosts brain power and improves memory
Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) is reported to have said:
“Learn Arabic for it strengthens the mind..”
Several studies have shown that someone who is bilingual or multilingual are better communicators, have sharper memories and have improved critical thinking abilities amongst other skills.
