New York City Mayor Says “I Am a Muslim Too”

At a protest held in New York’s Times Square, the Mayor of New York City Bill De Blasio proclaimed “I am Muslim too” in solidarity with Muslim Americans.

He also described Muslims as “overwhelmingly peace loving people”:

There are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world. Overwhelmingly like every other faith, overwhelmingly peace loving people who care about their family, care about their community and try and do good on this earth.

He went onto deliver a message of solidarity:

We have to dispel the stereotypes. We have to show that there is a human commonality
across all peoples and all faiths. So the message today, the message is one of solidarity. The message is one that we are going to live through each other’s hearts, through each other’s eyes see the world. So I am proud to say today I am a Muslim too.

The mayor called on people to stand up for fairness and justice:

I am proud to be associated with hundreds of thousands of good New Yorkers who make this city better all the time by the work they do and in neighbourhoods all over this city… We my friends, we the people will have the final say. And the people believe in fairness and justice for all. Thank you, God bless you all.
