My 14 Reasons on the Importance of Reading

Our faith places a great importance in seeking knowledge, learning and self-development and essentially through reading we are able better ourselves, gain more knowledge and ultimately achieve our goals.

Studies show that reading plays a significant role in the development and educational performance of a person. Similarly, evidence suggests that people who read every day, not only perform better in life, but they also develop increased general knowledge, a better understanding of other cultures and they have a broader vocabulary.

In my honest opinion, I firmly believe that reading keeps our minds active and that you can grow so much simply by reading. It is something that I take very seriously and I would highly recommend that we all make reading a habit as the benefits are immense.

I have covered 14 reasons on the importance of reading below. I hope it inspires you to have a greater love for reading and you can learn its importance. Moreover, I hope you can develop a brand new desire to explore the world of reading Insha’Allah. Here goes…

1. Sound Knowledge

Reading helps to develop your knowledge and mind. The more knowledge you have, the better equipped you are to tackle the challenges you may face in life. Always remember that no one can take away your knowledge from you.

2. Improved Focus and Concentration

This allows you to improve your focus and concentration as reading helps you to think straight and pay more attention. Reading keeps you focused and it automatically trains your mind to concentrate.   

3. Vocabulary Expansion

The more you read, the more words you gain exposure to, and they’ll inevitably make their way into your everyday vocabulary. This will in turn help you to become more articulate and well-spoken which is of great help in any profession and in life generally.

4. Mental Stimulation and Stress Reduction

Studies have shown that staying mentally stimulated can slow the progress of (or possibly even prevent) Alzheimer’s and Dementia, since keeping your brain active and engaged prevents it from losing power.

No matter how much stress you may have at work or other issues faced in daily life, it all just slips away when you lose yourself in a great book.

5. Improved Communication Skills

Communication is the most important tool which can be transmitted through reading. As you communicate through reading, you understand more, and therefore you can communicate better with people. Through reading, you build a more solid foundation for communication.

6. Better Writing Skills

Exposure to well-written work can definitely have an effect on one’s own writing. You will be able to pick up on various writing styles from other writers which can indirectly influence you and help you improve.  

7. Stronger Analytical Thinking Skills and Creativity

Reading exposes you to a world of imagination, it provides you with the ability to analyse details and critique things more effectively. In essence, by reading, you are exploring a different angle to see a thing you’ve known, on how different action leads to different results.

8. Self-Improvement

Through reading, you begin to understand the world better and thus you have a greater understanding on a topic that may interest you. This also helps build your self-confidence and as a result you are able to work on areas that will develop you further in the future.

9. Better Understanding

The more you read, the more you understand things better. This allows you to formulate a better understanding of life as well as gain new life skills.

10. Exploration of New Ideas

Reading enables you to have exposure to new things, new information and different ways of thinking. You are able to build on new ideas, solve problems and work towards success.

11. Good Experience

When you read, you are able to draw on and learn from the knowledge, skills and experience of someone else. This can help you to learn from someone else and get on the path for achieving success.

12. Preparation to take Action

This is a fantastic way to push you to take action. Reading is an essential way to help and guide you. You are able to be more proactive and more prepared for life.

13. Developed Future Skills

Reading has the ability to boost educational achievement and empower others. You can pick up on many soft skills such as communication, listening, public speaking simply by reading. Research suggests that reading can foster better literacy and numeracy.

14. Memory Enhancement

In order to improve your memory, it is highly advised to read more as reading provides you with a unique ability for comprehension and insight. You can subsequently remember things better and be more aware.
