Student Gets Out of Debt By Reciting Du’a Taught By The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Erasing Debt

It has been recorded in Jami’ At-Tirmidhi that a man who was in debt came to Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) seeking his help to pay off some debt. Ali told him:

“Shall I not teach you some words which the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me? If you say it, Allah will take care of your debt even if your debt was as big as a mountain.”

He then mentioned the following Du’a: “ اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلاَلِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ”

Which means: “Suffice me with that which is lawful against that which is prohibited and make me independent of all those besides You.”

Transliteration: Allahumakfinee bihalaalika ‘an haraamika wa aghninee bifadhlika ‘amman siwaak

Arshan, a student at a University in Malaysia fell into debt but he knew the du’a above so he decided to ask Allah for assistance using the du’a taught to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Here is Arshan’s story:

I went to a currency exchange shop and left in a  hurry without counting. Later I found out that received RM 3,000 less than what I was supposed to receive. This was like the end of my life as a student.

I could not pay my tuition fees and the university charged me 9% late payment penalty which added to the burden. I had no idea where and how to arrange the money I owed.

I felt as though I was being submerged by the debt. I tried hard for a job but failed. Then I turned to Allah and asked him using the du’a mentioned in the following the below hadith:

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلاَلِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

“Suffice me with that which is lawful against that which is prohibited and make me independent of all those besides You.” [Jami` at-Tirmidhi]

This was when the doors of mercy opened. I stayed with a dear friend who let me stay without paying any rent. Some friends left for vacation and gave me their room key which I gave on rent to others. These tenants were my good friends who then paid for my food. My brother left as well for Eid and I put his bike on rent lol!

My friend got in need of money all of a sudden which put me to concern, as I still couldn’t save enough. But the very next day, a shaikh of mine visited me and gave me a big amount which saying its from my brother –  which I thought was from my blood brother. To my shock, he meant himself to be the brother.

This way, Allah helped me pay off my debts. All praise be to Allah who is all-Hearing and all-Seeing, and is the Most Merciful!
