This Mosque Has Been Described as “One of London’s Best Kept Secrets”

Hidden away amidst residential buildings in the heart of East London is a mosque which has been described as “one of London’s best kept secrets” – The Burdett Estate Mosque.

The new mosque was opened in April 2017 and is a beautiful example of how a mosque can be designed in a way which complements the surrounding area.

The most striking feature of the mosque is the glass minaret which is situated at the corner and faces Makkah:

The minaret is sure to become an iconic feature in the neighbourhood:

Another beautiful feature of the mosque is the Kufic calligraphy found on one side of the building:

The phrase “there is no god but Allah” is repeated on specially-designed shutters which cover the doors and windows of both floors.

As the sun shines through, the panels are designed to project the words into the hall:

Inside, the focal point of the Mosque is towards the direction of prayer:

The Imam’s place of prayer from where he leads the congregation and the Minbar are located within the minaret!

The ceiling has been designed in such a way to allow the sound to travel across the hall creating a wonderful listening experience when the Qur’an is recited:

Earth tone colours have been used to give a natural feel:

The mosque was built in partnership with the local community as part of the local council’s St Paul’s Way regeneration programme which will include a school, play areas and 109 new homes when finished.

The founders of the mosque faced many challenges in establishing the mosque and many have not lived to see this beautiful purpose-built mosque.

The mosque started in a flat in 1982, which was used only for Tarawih, Eid prayers and as a place to teach children the Qur’an.

In 1984, the mosque was moved to another building with the five daily prayers held in a number of adjoining rooms. Now, the mosque is located in Masjid Lane in Poplar, Tower Hamlets.

Faruq uncle (as everyone lovingly calls him) is one of the founders of the original mosque and he told me how they would regularly face anti-Muslim abuse – both verbally and physically. He recalled the time a pig’s head was left outside the mosque.

Faruq says everybody is pleased with the new mosque but a mosque with no people is not of much use so his wish now is for the youth to get more involved,

“My message for the youth is to organise more activities in the mosque.”

Kamal Hussain who is part of the mosque’s committee paid homage to the elders:

“It’s overwhelming to see that the seed that was planted by our fathers and uncles has come to fruition. They couldn’t even speak English and faced many challenges.”

The mosque has a dedicated section for women where many activities take place. Kamal told me,

“If the sisters are (spiritually) strong, the community will also be strong.”

Finally, he thanked Allah for blessing the community with an amazing mosque:

“To have this amazing mosque is from the will of Allah.”

I Went to Hajj Burdened With Debt and I Came Back Debt-Free

Something amazing happened to me at Hajj…

I have been going through some financial difficulties as a result of a big corporation making a small avoidable mistake that has cost me a couple of thousand pounds. This had an indirect consequence which resulted in other debts too.

I had threatening calls, emails which even led to a court case that I eventually lost, though the judge was sympathetic. I was told to give up and cut my losses and just get over it, but I persisted.

With all these debts looming over my head, I still decided to make Hajj this year. I made du’a that Allah relieve me of my debts and he make successful in this life and the hereafter.

Having completed Hajj, I was waiting at Jeddah airport to board the plane back to London. I checked my emails and to my shock, one of the big corporations I was dealing with, decided to reimburse me in full!

But the story doesn’t end there. Someone who knew of some of my issues and without me even asking, offered to pay off all my debts.

“How much is your debt? Is it ÂŁ20,000, ÂŁ10,000? Don’t worry, I’ll pay it all off for you!”

I politely declined. How true are the words of the Prophet ï·ș

“Keep on doing Hajj and ‘Umrah, for they eliminate poverty and sin just as the bellows eliminate impurities from iron, gold and silver.” (Tirmidhi)

Imam Tariq said the mosque initially planned to take only 40 people but had to increase it to over 100 due to demand. He told the Washington Post:

“We wanted people to feel as comfortable as possible and we wanted to do our best and did not want anyone to have any discomfort.”

One of the evacuees, Sally Killic said:

“Lots of hospitality, they’ve been feeding us three meals, giving us cots to sleep on and we’ve just had an excellent experience. And of course, being in the Islamic community is just wonderful for us.”

Many other mosques have also opened their doors, providing shelter, food and daily necessities for those in need.

Kids’ Hajj Project Featuring Batman and Joker Goes Viral

Photos of a Kids’ Hajj project went viral after they were shared on social media.

A Muslim mum built a Hajj model with her kids to teach them about Hajj.

It featured all the major sites of Hajj including Safa & Marwa, Mina, Arafat, Muzdalifa and the Jamarat.

Then the kids decided to put ‘Ihrams’ on their superhero figures.

Their dad Faraz Ali posted some pics on social media and the posts went viral:

Reacting to all the attention the Hajj project was getting, Faraz Ali told IlmFeed,

“And so, my son suggested why don’t we take Joker along with Batman. And he put ‘Ihram’ (on them) and I thought it was the cutest thing because he realised that even Joker can be good, he can seek redemption and he can go on Hajj with Batman. I thought it was really cute I took a picture of it and I posted it on social media and before I knew it, it went completely viral. And I think people really related to it because it really shows the innocence of children.

The fact that a child who knows that Joker is the ultimate villain, you know alongside Batman who’s one of the greatest heroes. It shows that if a child can understand that a villain is not beyond redemption. It shows this idea of God’s mercy being greater than His wrath. And that’s one of the things that we understand as Muslims. The idea that Allah is more loving – that God is more loving than He is vengeful, than He is angry. And we felt that was such a beautiful thing to show.”

A Bosnian Man Was Cured of a Tumor After He Went to Hajj and Drank Only Zam Zam Water

This is the true story of a Bosnian man who was cured from severe illness after performing Hajj.

Nihad J. from Sarajevo was diagnosed with a severe form of liver tumor at the age of 32. The illness worsened day by day, and the doctors lost all hope of healing, giving him very little time to live. However, Allah, the Merciful gave Nihad a full recovery. Until this day, he is alive and well in his hometown. How did this happen? Read his incredible story below:

“In 2006, it was established that I was suffering from liver tumor which was rapidly spreading. As they say, a sick man has only one desire – and that is health. So I went to hospitals and doctors, performed tests and went to therapies. I looked everywhere for a cure but did not find it anywhere. After the final examination, the doctors pointed out that my only salvation was to carry out liver transplantation in Maribor (Slovenia) or in Switzerland. As you know, it is really difficult to find a donor and there is a long waiting list – my time was running out.

Since I was little, I was attached to my faith, I loved Islam, and I found comfort in it. Nothing in this world can be compared to the value and beauty of Islam. That is why I did not want to leave this world without fulfilling my biggest desire – going to the Hajj.

And so, in 2007 (7 months after my diagnosis) I completed all the preparations and went to perform the fifth Islamic duty. I did not even imagine that I would find a cure for my illness right there, in the holy places of Makkah and Madinah alhamdulillah. Upon arriving in Madinah, I met an Imam from Visoko (city in Bosnia, near Sarajevo). He noticed that one of my feet was somewhat shorter than the other which happened as a result of wounding in the war. He asked me about my health and how I was finding the trip. I told him that the problem with my legs was nothing compared to a tumor that was slowly killing me.

Then the Imam said to me, “You’ve come to the right place. Did you hear about the healing properties of Zam Zam water? It is by Allah’s permission a cure, and it is for that which is intended. Drink of it as much as possible, with a niyyah of healing, and everything will be well.”

I listened to his advice and during my stay in Makkah and Madinah I consumed only Zam Zam water. I did not eat anything for six days; Zam Zam was my food and drink. I immediately felt the changes in my health and I felt better each day. After returning to Bosnia, we discovered that the tumor was conquered, thank you Allah. Of course, it came as a surprise, both to me and the family, and my doctors.

Before going to the Hajj, I went to health checkups once in every 15 days or a month, depending on the doctor’s recommendation. Before the trip to Makkah, the tumor grew by as much as 5 cm in just six months, which is really a lot. Immediately after returning from Makkah, I went to the hospital for examination and the doctor found that during the month of departure and return from the Hajj, the tumor did not increase not even by one millimeter. After 15 days, I went back and again, it was the same situation. After a month, it was retreating! And so, eleven years have passed and I’m a healthy man. Until this day, I continue to drink Zam Zam, and I’m thankful to my Lord for the healing he has given me. ”

This story is a living proof of Allah’s power and the healing effects of faith. We can not even imagine the difficulty of the aforementioned situation, and the pain of Nihad’s family. However, Allah has replaced the sadness of this man with the joy of healing. This is a lesson for all of us: we must never lose hope in the mercy of our Lord.
